(RALEIGH, N.C.)—Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP is pleased to announce that Catharine Biggs Arrowood has been named the Chairman of the North Carolina Symphony Society Board of Trustees. Ms. Arrowood will work with other board members and Symphony staff to ensure the organization remains a vital and honored component of North Carolina's cultural life.
“Catharine has added an immense amount of energy and enthusiasm to the NC Symphony, as I am sure she adds to anything that she is involved with,” said Don Davis, Interim CEO of the North Carolina Symphony and former Progress Energy Executive. “That, in combination with her excellent judgment and professionalism, has been a tremendous asset to the symphony during these challenging times.”
Ms. Arrowood, a partner in Parker Poe’s Raleigh office, has been a member of the Symphony Society Board of Trustees since 2003. Prior to her role as Chairman, she served as Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. In these roles, she worked to secure financial resources and engage in strategic planning to support the Symphony and its mission – efforts she will continue as Board Chairman.
Ms. Arrowood, as Chair, will also preside over the Executive Committee, which is empowered to make most of the impactful and day-to-day decisions, including management selection and budget changes and approval. The Chair also oversees the Governance Committee, which nominates trustees and officers and fills vacancies of trustees and society board officers.
“This has been a challenging and rewarding year for Catharine due to the departure of the President and CEO just as she became Chair, especially in the midst of the continuing economic recession,” added Davis. “However, we expect to meet our financial plan this year and very shortly announce our selection of a new President and CEO. These are major accomplishments of Catharine’s first year as Chair of the NC Symphony Society Board.”
The North Carolina Symphony Society is a 60-person Board of Trustees that serves as the governing body of the North Carolina Symphony Society, Inc.
Highly committed to community service, Ms. Arrowood also serves as the President of the North Carolina Supreme Court Historical Society, a role she has held since 2008. Additionally, she has served as President of the Wake County Bar Association and Chair of the Wake Forest Law School Board of Visitors.
Ms. Arrowood litigates and arbitrates for both large and small businesses and has considerable experience with regulated companies. She has lectured and written on various aspects of complex litigation, including managing complex cases, federal civil procedure and arbitration and mediation. Ms. Arrowood chairs the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Rules Advisory Committee and the International Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
