Steve Hunting counsels clients on corporate expansions and relocations, complex commercial contracts, joint ventures, and information technology agreements and licenses. He has particular experience with energy, economic development, manufacturing, and information technology projects and transactions. His experience as in-house counsel at a large electric utility helps him provide practical, effective advice.

His energy clients include universities, electric utilities, electric power cooperatives, commercial and industrial companies, independent power producers, renewable energy developers, engineering companies, and contractors. He advises them on combined heat and power, energy storage, and microgrid projects, as well as electric generation projects involving biogas, biomass, landfill gas, solar, and wind.

Steve has assisted many companies establishing new or expanded facilities and has broad experience with incentives negotiations, site selection, and obtaining road, rail, and other infrastructure improvements to support projects. His economic development clients include Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, Gilead Sciences, Linamar Corporation, GF Linamar, and Egger Wood Products.

Steve’s manufacturing clients include domestic and international companies that produce automotive components, resin products, medicines, and high-tech equipment. He has assisted those clients with, among other things, acquisitions, joint ventures, economic development incentives, and supply agreements.

Steve's technology clients are in automotive, health care, and other industries. He has helped those clients launch telematics and monitoring technologies, dealership management systems, electronic health record systems, cloud-based patient portals, and other software solutions.

Representative Experience

Corporate Expansions and Relocations

  • Represented Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company in establishing a new iron foundry in Stanly County, North Carolina, involving an investment of $325 million, 400 jobs, and substantial public infrastructure improvements.
  • Represented Nestlé Purina PetCare Company in establishing a new manufacturing plant in Rockingham County, North Carolina, involving an investment of $425 million and 300 jobs.
  • Represented Gilead Sciences in establishing a new business services center in Wake County, North Carolina, involving an investment of $5 million and 275 jobs.

Energy

  • Represented a university in a solar energy transaction under North Carolina’s Green Source Advantage program.
  • Represented a university in a long-term renewable natural gas purchase.
  • Represented a university in combined heat and power and microgrid project.
  • Represented a developer of combined heat and power projects fueled by poultry litter and digester biogas.
  • Advised clients in transactions to develop and operate landfill gas electric generating facilities, including operations and maintenance agreements.
  • Drafted engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for solar PV and energy storage projects.
  • Advised developers of solar PV electric generating facilities on engineering, procurement, and construction contracts, operations and maintenance agreements, power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements, and other project agreements.
  • Represented a solar thermal energy developer in a series of rooftop installation transactions.

Technology

  • Advised an automotive OEM and automotive finance company on many aspects of agreements to provide telematics services.
  • Advised a large automotive dealership group on software and information technology services agreements for more than 20 years.
  • Represented hospital systems negotiating license, services, and maintenance and support agreements for electronic health records and other software.

Other Transactions

  • Represented the majority investor in connection with a technology joint venture involving investors from, and operations in, several countries.
  • Represented the majority owner in a sale to a public company of equity interest in a transportation and logistics joint venture.
  • Represented an international public company in establishing a U.S. joint venture and its U.S. advanced manufacturing facility.
  • Advised a manufacturing client on production equipment purchase contracts with suppliers in several countries.
