Yusuf Hasan has approximately 10 years of experience in U.S. and international patent prosecution, patent portfolio management, and intellectual property strategy. He has advised clients ranging from Fortune 50 corporations to startups, including in relation to complex machinery, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), and other technologies.

Yusuf frequently counsels clients on patentability and infringement opinions, freedom-to-operate analyses, and trademark prosecution. He began his career as a test and validation systems engineer, working for a decade in the aerospace and automotive industries. That experience informs his counsel today as he helps clients understand the various avenues available to build and protect their IP portfolio within their schedule, scope, and cost targets.

He also has broader experience in international trade compliance. In a prior role, he partnered with business leaders, engineers, and supply chain teams to mitigate compliance risk while enabling research and development (R&D) advancement for defense and commercial propulsion system technology.

Yusuf received his law degree from the University of Connecticut and his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Kettering University.

Representative Experience

  • Advised clients on a range of complex technologies, including propulsion and energy systems to power tools, gas turbine engine combustion systems, fiber optic networks, machine learning and AI, and computer-implemented methods and control systems.
  • Drafted and prosecuted U.S. and international (PCT) patent applications, managed global patent portfolios, and coordinated with foreign associates to align prosecution strategies.
  • Prepared patentability, freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement opinions within aggressive product development schedules; guided R&D and business decision-making.
  • Counseled client inventors and business leaders regarding the patenting process, patent strategies, maintaining trade secrets, and best practices for promoting invention disclosure output from engineering.
  • Prepared and prosecuted U.S. trademark applications and coordinated with foreign associates for international trademark filings.
  • Seconded with a startup-style technical team within a Fortune 50 client and led an IP legal team to develop and transfer the patent portfolio relating to a next-generation power generation system.
